The last time that Walsall lost a Midlands Two league match was in late November last year. Last Saturday they faced the same opponents when they travelled to Dronfield. Since their last encounter the North Derbyshire team have now established themselves as the clear leaders of Midlands Regional 2. It was obvious that the hosts were very aware of the challenge that their opponents posed. They were keen to establish some superiority from the first whistle.
Incredibly, their very first attack resulted in a try within two minutes as the visitors failed to cope with a kick towards their try line. Five minutes later they were again sweeping through for another score. But Walsall’s Ben Pitt intercepted a pass, and then, the outside half, set off on an eighty-yard try scoring run. Adam Nunney put over the conversion and then put over a penalty after Saunders had put over a penalty for the hosts. The Dronfield winger converted two more tries and a penalty before half time.
Early in the second half the Walsall team had a good period of possession and after some good drives, hooker Pete Fitzgerald burst through for the touchdown which Nunney converted. During the final ten minutes the visitors manage to score another try with scrum half Connor Pitt going through after a quickly taken penalty. Nunney again added the conversion. But it was the hosts that scored the final tries to secure their bonus point victory.
