Walsall made the ideal start in their latest Regional Two league match. Only eleven minutes had been played and they had already established a 20 – 0 lead over their Castle Bromwich opponents. They showed their attacking intent after just two minutes. Captain Adam Nunney made a good carry. Max Brown kicked ahead with his fellow winger Dan Carpenter won the race for the touchdown with Nunney adding the conversion. Four minutes later, Dean Ainger was given the ball from a lineout near the half way line. The Walsall scrum half then produced a superb try scoring run through the Saltleians defence for a spectacular touchdown. Next score came from the restart as the ball was secured and then, outside half Ben Pitt, put up a high kick. This was chased and gathered by Max Brown who then beat the covering defence over forty yards for another fine try. This was followed by two Ben Pitt penalties which gave his team a 23 – 0 lead with only a quarter of the game being played. The visitors opened their scoring just before the half time whistle. A strong scrum resulted in No 8 Martin Wood making another bulldozing run for a try which James converted.
The hosts failed to make, and maintain, any sustained attacks during the second half. Ben Pitt added a penalty after another strong run by Nunney. Pitt also added the conversion to a try which Rhys Jones scored after good ball carries by front row forwards George Green and Pete Fitzgerald. The final score came after a kindly bounce after a kick ahead resulted in a try. This was followed by the final whistle.
The team maintain their third place in the league. They now have a seasonal break. But start the new year with another game at Delves Road when second placed West Bridgford will be their opponents.
