Walsall produced some superb rugby as they made their first ever visit to the outskirt of Leicester to play Belgrave. The hosts proved to be a well organised and hard-working outfit who showed good basic skills in all aspects of the game. But they faced a Walsall team who are beginning to show a great deal of confidence in their running and handling game. The visitors opened the scoring after eight minutes They retained possession as they took play deep into their opponents territory. Eventually some quick passes resulted in outside half, Ben Pitt, finding George Green with a well-timed pass. The Walsall prop forward showed good speed to go over for a try near the corner flag. Captain, Adam Nunney, stepped up and put over an excellent conversion. This he did the same with the other seven tries scored by his team mates during the afternoon! It was not long before the visitors broke away for another try. Scrum half, Joe Coleman, instigated the counterattack. Lock forward, Lucas Cotterell gave good support and then Number 8 Rhys Jones showed good speed over twenty yards for the try. Four minutes later, it was full back Toby Smith that started the counterattack. He gathered a clearance kick and then used his pace to make the initial break before kicking ahead. Captain Nunney was quick to follow up and managed to make a cross-field football style cross field kick to Dean Ainger on the right wing. Ainger was quick to beat the defenders and touched down near the goal posts. The next score once again involved the same two players. Smith making a good run before passing to Ainger who raced over for the try from twenty-five yards. The hosts always threatened to breakthrough the hard-working Walsall defence. During the final minutes of the first half, they were rewarded for their efforts as they scored tries from a lineout drive and a scrum close to the Walsall try-line. The visitors soon took control early in the second half. It was Connor Pitt that made the initial break, Nunney was again in support, and once again Rhys Jones was in support for another twenty yards try scoring run. The next Walsall score came from another counterattack after a Belgrave kick out of defence. It was Dan Carpenter who made the breakthrough on this occasion. The Walsall winger showed some superb evasive skills as he weaved through the Belgrave defence. He found Rhys Jones in support, who then passed the ball to Ainger who ran in his hatrick try. Next score came after hooker Pete Fitzgerald took a quick penalty, made a strong carry and found Ben Pitt in support. The Walsall outside half found his hard-working flanker, George Hill, in support to go through for the try. The hosts continued to show a committed attitude and scored two late tries to secure a try bonus point. But the visitors still had time to run in another try. Ben Pitt touchdown after good carries by Richard Clarke, Carpenter and Hill. Nunney then steps up to put over his eighth successful conversion. This bonus point win sees Walsall move into third in Midlands Regional Two North.
